Yoga is widely known as one of the best forms of physical movement. Although it originated in India, its practice has spread across the globe. However, it is not just exercise. Rooted in ancient wisdom, yoga is considered a way of life. It combines physical movement, breath work, and mindful awareness to support overall wellness and optimal health.


On April 7, 2026, we celebrate World Health Day, reflecting on daily practices that keep us healthy while finding inspiration to do better. Health is one of the greatest treasures we can give to the next generation. Teaching them to prioritize it is vital. In India, what better way to integrate wellness into daily life than through simple yoga poses.


The early years are a period of rapid growth: physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. What we teach children during these formative years tends to stay with them for a lifetime. This stage also lays the foundation for lifelong habits. For example, we encourage them to brush their teeth twice a day from the start. This practice then continues throughout life. Similarly, introducing yoga at an early age allows children to build a positive relationship with the practice. While children experience and enjoy movement through games and sports, they also benefit from the well-rounded impact yoga provides for the body and overall wellbeing.

Especially with a generation exposed to excessive screen time, gentle, age-appropriate yoga poses can offer balance by promoting movement, flexibility, and body awareness. Starting early can make it a joyful and consistent part of their routine.

Breathing exercises such as “balloon breathing” (pretending to inflate and deflate a balloon with deep breaths) help children regulate emotions. When they learn to pause and take deep breaths, they gain tools to manage frustration, anxiety, and overstimulation.

In busy urban environments, children are often exposed to noise, traffic, and fast-paced routines. Mindful movement provides a calming counterbalance. A few minutes of quiet breathing and stretching can help reset the nervous systems.

Research consistently shows that children who practice mindfulness demonstrate improved concentration, stronger emotional regulation, and better social skills. For preschoolers, this translates into improved listening, sharing, and cooperative play.

The Role Of Parents & Educators

At home, yoga can become a shared activity. When parents practice alongside, they model healthy habits. When a child sees a parent stretching or breathing calmly, they learn that self-care matters. It is important to keep sessions short (10–20 minutes) and voluntary. The emphasis should remain on exploration and enjoyment.
